Anycity Celebrates 150 Years

Anycity, GA 03/04/2006 - Red, white and blue streamers and balloons gently fluttered in and out of a cool breeze Friday afternoon at the band stand in downtown Anycity. Even the birds seemed to chirp a little louder to accompany some cool tunes courtesy of the jazz band at Anycity State University. It was back a century and a half ago, on March 3, 1856, when the city of Anycity was chartered. So Friday the city kicked off its celebration with a big birthday party.

Friday's event was the first in a year-long celebration, which includes plans to produce a video to send to prospective residents now living in the Northeast.

Mayor John Stumbo cut two large birthday cakes after joining in with several dozen residents in singing "Happy Birthday" to the city.

"We need to sing Happy Birthday and somebody needs to lead it other than me," the mayor chuckled.

Laughter and soft chatter blended in with applause and cake-munching as Stumbo addressed the crowd.

"We've got a lot of things going on in our city," he said. "Truly Anycity is on the move and I'm really encouraged by the economic development and annexation. We're growing and I appreciate your support."

A sesquicentennial committee of about 35 residents are producing events throughout the year. Anyone is encouraged to join.

Anycity resident Velma Bennett happened upon the downtown scene right before the lunch hour, happy to see that people were gathered together.

"I think this is wonderful. It gives people a chance to get out in the community and enjoy each other," said Bennett.

"I just like to see people together. And I get to call my kids in Ohio and Michigan and tell them they still got on coats!" she laughed.

We took a hard look at our existing website and decided we needed to make some changes. This new site is designed to be friendlier, more informative and more interactive. Its design and structure will also allow for exciting future online services.

The new business-related directories are complete and local businesses and industries are invited to log on and submit their information for consideration.

Using a color scheme derived from a fresh Georgia peach, the site is divided into six well-organized sections. Menu items across the top of the page take users to a basic information menu and sections for both visitors and residents. There are also sections for business and government as well as a section consolidating all online services being offered by the county. Development of this section will be ongoing. Clicking any of the menu items in the header will take the viewer to a detailed menu for that section.

The new site also includes a comprehensive news section with headlines on the home page linking to details. News will be updated on a regular basis and county residents should check this section of the often for important information. Commission meeting agendas and minutes will be posted and future plans call for audio and video presentations of commission meetings.

This new site includes an amazing amount of content about our county … it has everything from fire prevention tips to online forms for the probate court to online boat registration to applications for hunting and fishing licenses. Literally hundreds of hours have been devoted to the design, development and implementation of this website. The goal is to get the word out that Peach County is a great place to live, work and raise families.

The site was designed and developed by Fort Valley native Jimmy Bennett and web designer/programmer Adrian Haager at ComputerOne in Augusta.
